Take in experimental music and film in an intimate gallery in Powderhorn on Friday, August 4, featuring songs from Crystal Myslajek + Chris Hepola accompanied by visuals by Shawna Lee, an improvised set from alone-a accompanied by visuals from Michael Wellvang, and a series of short experimental films from Jonah Castañeda Barry.

Crystal Myslajek & Chris Hepola

Crystal Myslajek is a multi-instrumental, sound artist, and collaborator. She explores deep listening, embodiment of sound, and connection through music. Drawing inspiration from minimalism, improvisation, pop, post-classical, jazz, ambient, and field recordings, she creates emotive dreamscapes and songs with spectral vocal loops and textural piano sketches.

Chris Hepola is a drummer, pianist and composer living in Minneapolis. He works with a wide variety of artists focusing on creative original music. In addition, Chris writes and arranges music for many musical groups. These ensembles incorporate strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, vocals, loops and electronic instruments.

Shawna Lee is an experimental video artist who creates live and recorded visuals using analog video synthesizers, modified electronic equipment, video mixers and feedback techniques.

Jonah Castañeda Barry

Jonah Castañeda Barry is a Chicano experimental multimedia artist currently located in Minneapolis, MN. He has a passion for direction, sound design, cinematography and editing. He is a semiprofessional distance runner, a product photographer and media manager at Mill City Running, a community organizer, a cinephile, screenwriter, a noise music producer, a member of the DSA, and the sole guardian of a cute cat named Moco.

alone-a, a solo exploratory sonic project from alana horton, explores the limits of memory and moment through vast tapestries of digital delays, voice, and densely rich signal processing in max/msp. Every audible sound that is generated comes from live input to surprising, chaotic, and ecstatic ends.

Michael Wellvang is an experimental filmmaker who explores early internet era aesthetics using found footage, as well as his own, shot on first generation digital cameras.
